For the past couple of years, Atlanta’s 6lack (pronounced Black) has been building up a fanbase through a series of digital releases that never stayed online for long. What many may have assumed was a marketing strategy was actually the young singer’s workaround for a restrictive record deal. “In July 2011, I signed to an independent record label owned by a popular artist at the time,” 6lack recently shared online. “The deal came with an advance that was little to nothing but at the time it was my only way out and the artist who I was signed to was very popular so I took the chance.
“For the next three years I had to make moves in secrecy. I put music out on my Soundcloud even though my contract didn’t allow me to release any music on my own. […] When the label found out I thought they would start taking me seriously but they didn’t and that’s when I knew I had to get the fuck out of there. I needed to work with people who understood my vision and would get behind it. People who understood what was going on in popular culture and not just popular radio.”
Earlier this year, he found that support with LVRN, the ATL-based management team behind Raury and D.R.A.M. 6lack’s official debut single “PRBLMS” was introduced to many soon-to-be fans in May of this year, via a Zane Lowe/Beats 1 exclusive and the buzz and love grew exponentially.
Millions of Soundcloud streams later, 6lack delivered his debut album “Free 6lack” via Interscope Records. He celebrated the critically acclaimed release with a free, sold out performance at Aisle 5 in Little 5 Points.
Clearly, the legion gathered there to celebrate 6lack’s new project included more than a handful of music lovers who were fans long before “PRBLMS.” While most of 6lack’s pre-Interscope catalogue may be lost to the web forever, Spotify recently put together a playlist to help those who are just discovering the Atlanta singer get familiar a little quicker:
“Free 6lack” is currently available on all digital platforms.
